When your body is trying to tell you something

Friend, for the last couple of weeks, my left eye has been twitching. Not now and then… constantly. Even in my sleep. (I asked my husband to check.)

The little muscle beneath my eye had apparently decided it was going to do its own thing, and no amount of willing it to stop seemed to make any difference.

It became so noticeable that I found myself mentioning it to clients before sessions because I was worried they would spend the entire appointment being distracted by the disco my eye was throwing.

I laughed it off, but honestly, I was becoming increasingly frustrated by it.

The more it twitched, the more attention I gave it. I researched possible causes. I scheduled blood work. I massaged the area. I went down internet rabbit holes.

Every time it twitched, my mind immediately returned to the same question:

What is wrong with me?

When Stress Shows Up in the Body

Meanwhile, nearly everyone around me (including Google) offered the same explanation: “It’s stress.”

And of course, I dismissed the idea emphatically. (Surely stress couldn’t make my eye twitch this badly. I must be dying.)

Then one afternoon last week, I finally had an opportunity to step away from everything. My husband, daughter, and I drove to Lake Ontario and spent a few hours sitting along the shoreline, picking through rocks and looking for sea glass.

There was nowhere we needed to be, nothing we needed to accomplish, and no particular goal beyond enjoying the day together.

Later, I spent some time by our backyard pond sorting my little seaside treasures into tiny jars while I listened to the waterfall and chirping birds. I let my inner child play. I lost track of time. And I exhaled.

And wouldn’t you believe it… my eye finally stopped twitching.

The Wisdom of the Mind-Body Connection

What struck me most about the whole experience was the realization that I had spent two weeks trying to get rid of the symptom without ever becoming curious about the message my body was sending me.

And the funny thing is, if you’ve worked with me, you know that listening to your body and noticing what you’re feeling under the feeling is something I teach all the time.

Man, I missed this message big time. I dismissed the exhaustion. I ignored the tension in my shoulders. I pushed through the headaches and said I’d slow down after the next thing. I got so good at overriding my own needs that I didn’t even notice the signals anymore. So my body yelled at me in its own way to get my attention.

Listening to Your Body’s Signals

Our bodies are remarkably wise.

They are gathering information constantly and responding in ways designed to protect us. Long before our minds consciously register that something is off, our bodies are often already sending the signals.

If you’ve been feeling depleted lately, stretched thin, or noticing physical symptoms that seem to appear out of nowhere, perhaps this is your invitation to get curious.

What if the symptom is offering information? What if your body is not working against you, but trying to guide you back toward balance?

Healing begins with slowing down and tending to your body’s needs.

Simple Ways to Support Nervous System Healing

My best friend likes to remind me that humans are basically complicated houseplants. We need water, sunlight, and earth to stay alive.

So if you’re feeling off and not sure where to start, consider:

  • Drinking a glass of water
  • Sitting in the sunshine
  • Connecting with nature
  • Taking a break from constant productivity
  • Giving yourself permission to rest

Sometimes the simplest forms of self-care are also the most powerful.

Reconnecting With Your Inner Wisdom

And if you’re finding it difficult to hear what you need through all the noise of life, I’m here.

Whether through Reiki with Sound Healing, Somatic Energy Coaching, or Private Yoga, much of the work I do is helping people reconnect with the wisdom already living inside them.

Your body may be speaking. The question is: are you listening?
