Two open hands cupping dirt and a green sapling

Science just gave us a message from our ancestors.

Friend, a new study caught my eye this week — one that lingered in the back of my mind for days as I tried to pull the threads of its deeper significance.

Here’s the short version: Researchers recently discovered that early humans were exposed to lead in their environment nearly two million years ago.

Let that sink in. Lead — a toxic metal linked to brain damage and serious illness — was part of our ancestors’ daily environment. And yet, this exposure caused a powerful gene mutation that ultimately enabled modern humans to develop complex language abilities that might never have emerged otherwise.

In other words, only because early humans were exposed to something harmful can we communicate the way we do today. 🤯

Turning Pain into Evolution

I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Because to me, it’s the perfect metaphor for how life — and healing — often work.

Sometimes, we walk through experiences that feel painful, senseless, or cruel: losing a loved one, a friendship, a job, or facing chronic illness. They shake us to our core and feel totally outside of our control.

But so often, those same experiences become the catalysts for our evolution.

They push us toward new perspectives, deeper compassion, and more embodied strength. They change our inner wiring — and, in doing so, they expand our capacity for empathy, love, and resilience.

My Own Evolution in Loss

Recently, I lost an adult friendship unexpectedly, without logic or closure. It hurt deeply and left me disoriented, unsteady, and unsure of what to hold on to. For days, I sat with the grief — not just over the loss itself, but over the security it pulled out from under me.

And then I thought of our ancestors — how something as destructive as lead exposure shaped the very evolution of our species.

It reminded me that just because I can’t see the bigger picture right now doesn’t mean there isn’t one. Maybe this ending was the push I needed to grow into a new chapter. Maybe it’s making space for friendships that are more aligned, mutual, and true. Maybe it’s teaching me to loosen my grip on what I can’t control.

Because even when we can’t see it, transformation is still happening.

Trusting the Unseen Work of Healing

Maybe you’re walking through something right now that makes no sense — a loss, a change, a decision you didn’t see coming. Maybe you’re carrying the weight of something you can’t yet understand.

If so, I hope this story — and the one of our ancestors — offers you a little exhale.

What if your body, spirit, and energy systems are already adapting? What if they’re protecting what’s tender, growing new roots, and reshaping you in ways that haven’t yet revealed themselves?

You don’t have to make meaning of it today. You don’t have to rush to reframe or find the silver lining. You can simply trust that your evolution is happening — even if you can’t yet feel it.

You are not broken. You are becoming.
