Friend, here in Western New York, fall is beginning to whisper through the trees. There’s a slow, gentle shift as the days get shorter and the leaves begin to change.
You know what cool thing I learned recently? Trees don’t just drop their leaves automatically; they choose to. 🤯
They pay attention to internal shifts (like reduced chlorophyll production as the sunlight decreases) and release a chemical called abscisic acid that triggers the letting go. They then redirect their energy inwards and down, hunkering down for the frost to come.
Isn’t that beautiful?
What Nature Teaches Us About Letting Go
It reminds me that some things, like seasons, change on their own without us having any say. While others, like boundaries, identities, and long-held patterns, require choice.
Recently, as I’ve been navigating perimenopausal symptoms, this truth has felt deeply personal. My body is shifting — and I don’t always like it. The brain fog is downright embarrassing at times (especially as an Adjunct trying to wow sleepy college students first thing on a Monday morning). My energy is lower, my body softer, and it all feels very foreign.
But I’m listening to the internal shifts and honoring that, while I can’t change this season in my life, I can choose how I meet it.
And I’ve realized that I don’t want to cling to the version of myself that I once was. Because not everything is meant to stay. Some parts of us — like outdated beliefs or loud ego — need to be composted, transformed, and returned to the soil to make room for what’s next.
Reflection: What Are You Ready to Release?
So I’ve been asking myself:
- What am I ready to release?
- What stories are past their season?
- What identities no longer fit this evolving body and life?
And maybe you’ve been asking yourself those questions, too.
This time of year invites us to live like the trees. To slow down, go inward, choose to let go, and trust that everything that’s leaving is exactly right — and preparing us for the next season (even if we don’t know what’s coming yet).
I feel that in my bones. Maybe you do, too.
